Your O’Connor Eagles are State Champs!!! The Eagles beat up the Mountain Ridge Mountain Lions by the score of 7-1. Freshman Barrett Skaugrud threw a complete game scattering 9 hits and striking out 8. Skaugrud pitched to his defense all night and was rewarded with a stellar team effort.
The Mt. Lions had two big rally’s that Skaugrud was able to nullify. In the first after a leadoff single, Jayce Easley ran out to short left field to catch a pop up over his shoulder, then Barrett got a groundball to 3rd for a 5-4-3 double play. Then in the 2nd, the mt. Lions scored a run and had 1st and 3rd no outs, but Skaugrud got a line drive to Noah Burgarello, who then doubled off the runner at 1st. Next batter hit a groundball to Burgarello and the Eagles were out of the inning. From then on Skaugrud would dominate, striking out 8 batters in the final 5 innings.
Offensively the Eagles grinded their way to 8 walks, 2 hit batsmen and 7 hits. With the score tied at 1’s in the 4th inning, the Eagles would put up a crooked number. Colton Kucera would lead off with an infield single and was followed by a hit by pitch and walk to load the bases with 1 out. Easley would drive in what turned out to be the winning run, with a high chopper to first base. Then Burgarello battle to 2 strikes a drove a ball down the right field line for a 2 RBI double. The Eagles would pile on in the 6th loading the bases with 2 outs. A wild pitch would score one, then Mason Skaugrud helped his little brother out with a 2 RBI single up the middle to take the 7-1 lead. Barrett Skaugrud would strike out the final batter for a state championship!! Special thanks to all alumni and coaches who have put blood sweat and tears into this program and tonight got to see the rewards of that work played out. Also thanks to the hundreds of Eagles fans who painted the stands blue and joined us in this championship!
