The OC hosted Pinnacle for a rematch of a heartwrenching loss on Friday, and came away with a nailbiter of a 5-4 victory. The Eagles were in control the whole game again, until the end, when with a 4-0 lead, the Pioneers got 2 runs in the 6th and 2 more in the 7th to make it a close game. Barrett Skaugrud cruised through 5 inning putting up goose eggs. A solo blast and a 2 out single got the Pioneers on the board in the 6th. With the score at 4-2, the Eagles scratched across the 5th run on an infield groundball from Aiden Sullivan. With the score 5-2 entering the 7th, Josh Butler came on to close and got the first 2 outs. The rally started with a walk followed by 2 hits. That made the score 5-4 with the tying run on first base. Hustyn Wheeler came on and got a 1 pitch save as the hitter lined a ball to rightfield.
Offense= We only had 4 hits on the afternoon which seems crazy because I thought we were in position to score all game. Luckily we got some big hits early, like Jacob Miller single off the 3rd baseman that scored two.
Pitching= Barrett pitched us deep in to the game and Butler looked to be in control, but again we just couldn’t put this team away with 2 strikes. Today we gave up 5 two-strike hits. Hustyn Wheeler was very efficient getting that 1 pitch save. I actually thought they would take a pitch, as they had seemed to have done with success that whole inning.
Get better= 1- this region is legit. Every game is a dogfight. That team was so hard to beat and their record doesn’t show it. 2- We need a little more urgency from this team. I think we sit back and think we are 10-5, without the reflection that we have 5 tough games in a row coming up. Schedule only gets harder from here.
Gameball= Blake Tigges came off the bench in the 6th and bunted the runner to 3rd. He would be driven in the next play and man that 5th run was the biggest run of the night. Who would have known. For a team struggling to get a bunt down it was nice to see BT come in and get the job done for us.
Tough week= We travel to Red Mountain tomorrow then host Perry on Friday. Two perennial top 10 teams to play this week. Should be fun to compete.
