The bats woke up for the Eagles just in time to beat a quality Chaparral team 10-5. Mason Skaugrud and Brendt Morgan had 2 hits a piece, while Colton Kucera and Cal Lambert each had 3 hits. Lambert pitched 5 innings, leaving with a 9-5 lead, allowing Coltin Fedina to throw an inning and Chase Valentine to close out the 7th. The big moment of the game came in the 4 inning, when with bases loaded, Lambert got a 5-4-3 double play started by Brayden Nichols. This ended a threat with the Eagles taking a 6-5 lead into the bottom half. The Eagles proceeded to score 3 runs in the bottom half to break the game open. These same two teams will square off on Tuesday at Chaparral.
Great to see so much fight from our guys. Couldn’t tell you what the difference is with these kids from one day to the next, but we had some offensive tenacity today. It is always contagious so it started well with those first 2 runs in the first inning, thanks to 2 out RBI’s from Kucera and Lambert. Lambert was a wrecking crew going 3 for 4 with 4 RBI’s to help himself out. How do we bottle up this offensive effort and release it every game the rest of the way?
Brendt Morgan took advantage of a big start, with 2 hits and 2 RBI’s. The best at bat he had wasn’t even a hit, but rather a groundout to 2nd driving in a run and moving a runner to 3rd so he could score in the next at bat.
Some new guys getting some new looks this week as we deal with injuries. Kucera has done a solid job moving in to the infield and Preston Lucas has done a solid job catching some tough stuff and personalities from our staff as a freshman catcher. Daniel Schwartz got a call up this week and took advantage with his first varsity stolen base. A sophomore that can run, catch and pitch is a great asset.
