The Eagles came out and ambushed the Firebirds of Chaparral, taking a 12-2 lead into the 6th inning. Looking for a run rule victory, the Eagles couldn’t close it out and went the full 7. Noah Nithman had 2 hits and 4 RBI on a double and triple, while Barrett Skaugrud went 3 for 3 with 2 RBI’s. Colton Kucera and Cal Lambert each had a pair of hits, helping the Eagles to 12 runs on 12 hits for the day. That was all the run support Cannon Smith would need, making his first varsity start of the season, going 5 strong innings with 5K’s and only 1 unearned run. The Eagles keep looking to finish the season strong with a back-back vs. Boulder Creek to finish the week Thursday/Friday.
This game comes down to a couple huge at bats offensively and defensively which helped to spark the outcome. With a 5-2 lead in the 5th and the outcome still in doubt, Barrett Skaugrud had a huge at bat with a baserunner on 3rd and the infield in. Barrett had a 7 pitch at bat and drove the 7th through into centerfield for a backbreaking run. We would chase that pitcher and score 4 more runs after his at bat. The second play came in the bottom half of the inning with a 10-2 lead but runners on 1st and 2nd and our pitcher running out of gas. He induced a first pitch 4-6-3 double play out of the 2 hitter to end the threat. That allowed us to pile on for 2 more in the top half and put the game away.
Man if we could have got out of there with a 12-2 win it would have been cool but the reality is that we are just trying to throw strikes, so if guys run into one or two balls, that happens. What we can’t do is walk, hit dudes or make errors with a big lead. At the end of the game we gave them the message to flush the last 1.5 innings and appreciate the first 5.5 !
Cannon Smith is now officially an Eagle. His first opportunity to pitch on Varsity and he took advantage, going 5 strong inning, while punching out 5 and giving up only 1 earned run. Kid had some good fastball movement and pounded the zone. We didn’t plan on him going 5 in his first outing but felt he earned the chance to go another inning.
End of season:
It is that time of year when every win is a big win. These last 2 games we have had some real good production throughout our lineup and that is great to see. Have to keep swinging it and giving our pitching staff a chance to shut teams down.
Jerry Dawson Field:
Always good to get out of there with a win, because that is the first time we have ever done so at their place. Great to do so at the field named after one of my personal mentors who still reaches out and encourages me throughout the season. Proud to play at the field that Coach Dawson built.
