The Eagles came out and put up 5 runs in the first, led 10-1 in the 5th, and hung on to beat the Jaguars of Boulder Creek 11-7. Barrett Skaugrud pitched 5 strong innings giving up only 1 earned run, while helping himself out by going 3 for 5 with 3 RBI’s. Cal Lambert had a big 2 RBI single in the first inning and Brayden Nichols hit his first varsity homerun in the 2nd, a two run shot. The Eagles just could not put the Jaguars away and had some self inflicted wounds to make the game so close. Chase Valentine threw the last 1 and 1/3rd to close the game out. The Eagles finish the series versus the Jaguars on Friday at the OC.
The wind was howling today and I thought that would affect the ball a little bit more, but other than one pop-up the wind didn’t really make a difference today. We are still working through some culture and dugout hiccups but are excited to see double digit runs on the board for the 3rd straight game.
Brayden Nichols crushed that ball to left field for his first homerun and played some great defense on the day. To move a guy from 3rd to shortstop mid game, have him take a backhand in the 5 hole, and throw it across for the final out was pretty impressive.
We have really struggled to have the focus to finish off games. Whether it is offensively trying to do too much instead of just doing the job required, or the focus defensively to collect outs, we have just put too much pressure on our pitchers. Sounds like high school kids…
