On a wonderful senior night, the OC beat Mountain Ridge 6-3 to wrap up the region title. Cal Lambert was dominant, striking out 8 in 6 innings, to earn his 6th win on the season. The Eagles threatened all day but didn’t have much to show for it until the 6th inning, when they put up a 5 spot. With one out in the 6th and runners on 1st and 2nd, Brendt Morgan drove in a run, on a base hit to right. Two batters later Amari Bartee drove in another run with a double down the line, his 3rd hit on the day. Chase Valentine then broke things open with a 2 RBI triple to the gap in right center. With a 6 run lead heading into the 7th, you would think the lead was safe, but the Mountain Lions kept battling and even brought the tying run to the plate, but a flyout to Lambert in left finished of the game. With an 8-2 record in region play, your O’Connor Eagles are now the 2019 region champs and will wait to see how the playoff standings come out on Tuesday.

Coaches Corner:
What a wonderful senior day. When you have your ceremony after the game, you are always rolling the dice on what the mood will be like with a win or loss. In this case it couldn’t have been better, with a region title and a sweep of our rival on the season. Great way to send out these seniors.

Meat on the bone:
Poor baserunning all game made this a bit of an offensive struggle. I felt like we had dominated the game, but only had a 1-0 lead in the 6th to show for it. We seemed to be allergic to taking the extra base tonight, so instead of making the game easy, we put ourselves in a position for it to be extremely difficult.

PItching effort;
Man Cal Lambert was good tonight. He was really up for the challenge and I felt like he could pitch out of any situation tonight. The biggest inning was probably the top of the 6th, where after a questionable interference call on a double play at second base nullifying a run, Lambert responded with a shut down inning on 11 pitches.

This is why my father always packed rolls of tums in his coaching bag. It felt so hard to get 3 outs in the 7th with a 6 run lead. We just don’t like to close things out easily I guess.

Amari Bartee got his first shot in the leadoff spot tonight and responded with 3 hits, including 2 doubles. Kid has been a better player this week.

Senior night:
7 wonderful seniors that all had a “hand” in our success this season. So happy for them to do something that hasn’t been done around here in a while, win a region championship.
