In a battle against one of the top 3 teams in the state, the OC went on the road to shock Mountain Pointe by the score of 4-3. Cannon Smith pitched his tail off for 5 innings, giving up solo runs in the 3rd and 4th, then Cole Dickson pitched great in the 6th, setting up some late game heroics from Colton Kucera to close out the game. The Eagles scored 2 in the first, thanks in part to a Greg Bozinovich double down the line, then 2 in the 4th with gutty sac flies from Barrett Skaugrud and Kucera. But the game came down to the bottom of the 7th inning. With a 4-3 lead the Eagles made it interesting with a leadoff walk of the 8 hitter. Kucera came on to close and proceeded to walk the first guy he faced. A sac bunt would put runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out and the 2 hitter up at the plate. Kucera would induce a big league pop up back to the 80 foot backstop, that catcher Preston Lucas would go back on and catch Willy Mays Hayes style up against the fence. With 2 outs the Eagles intentionally walked the bases loaded to face the 4 hitter in the lineup. Kooch would just miss with a couple sliders to bring us to the dramatic: 3-2 count, bases juiced, runners on the move… And Kooch punched him out on a fastball, then jumped off the mound for joy. Great ball game all around for the Eagles who have one power point game left before the spring break tourney. Next up is Desert Vista at home on Thursday.
What a ballgame. I am so excited for our guys to be able to experience a great game like that one. The strategy and the competitiveness make for such a fun environment in sports. Great to see our guys rise to the challenge when facing a team of that caliber.
Scouts: Our buddies were back to watch a couple guys on the MP team. Deservedly so those players definetly have some talent. That being said I think Kucera was the best player on the field today. Dude smoked a couple balls that I don’t know how they got caught, then came on for one of the gutsiest saves we have seen around here. The second best player on the field you could argue was their catcher. Man that kid could pick it and throw it with the best of them, and blocked everything. But I get it scouting is not an exact science and they are looking to check certain boxes.
Pitching: All 3 of our pitchers made some great pitches today. To hold that lineup to 3 solo runs is pretty impressive. They hit a couple balls worthy of the 20 foot bat flips they got, but our guys minimized and kept them from putting up any crooked numbers.
Catching: Preston Lucas had that huge catch to change the game at the end and allow us to not only get the 2nd out, but gave us the ability to intentionally walk their power hitter that we wanted no part of. Preston also took a ball off the back wall and gunned down a baserunner trying to go first to 3rd. 2 huge momentum plays!
Gameball: Kooch all day baby!!
